YOUNGSTOWN, Fla. (WMBB) – It was a somber Monday morning in Bay County as families and friends continued to process the tragic loss of the local boy who tragically drowned Saturday afternoon.

Bay County deputies respond to suspected drowning near Pitt Springs

“My heart goes out to the family and our prayers are with them. And I couldn’t imagine going through what they’re going through right now,” said Bay County Sheriff’s Office Captain Jason Daffin.

On Saturday, the boy jumped in the water at the popular tubing spot Pitt Springs. He was quickly taken by the current and was submerged for around an hour.

“Even if you’re a great swimmer, those currents can pull you. Whether you’re an Olympic swimmer, it doesn’t matter. Sometimes those currents are so strong,” said Daffin.

Bay County Emergency Responders and members from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission responded around thirty minutes after he was pulled underwater.

When he was recovered, he was immediately pronounced dead.

While authorities haven’t released the student’s name, grief counselors were present at Merritt Brown Middle School to help friends and staff members process the loss.

Students and the boy’s family will honor his life during halftime of the school’s basketball team’s game Tuesday afternoon.
