BAY COUNTY, Fla. (WMBB) – Panama City is planning to add more parking lots. The city has grant money through the Hometown Revitalization Program that has to be used for general public parking.

Per the grant guidelines, the city must sign a lease agreement with the churches that own those properties. First Baptist Church and St. Andrew Baptist Church have agreed to lease the city some lots.

The city will be improving three parking lots. They are at the corners of Harrison and Sixth, Grace and Sixth, and one in St. Andrews at 15th Street and Bayview Avenue.

City officials will spend about $240,000 on each lot.

“Those lots will provide additional public parking so we certainly don’t want to take advantage of the Church’s asset, but we want to make sure that in order to get the improvements done, we’re protected legally and not subject to clawback,” Panama City Assistant City Manager Jared Jones said. “We’re looking forward to partnering with both churches to provide additional public parking,” Assistant City Manager Jared Jones said.

There is no timeline for when construction will begin on any of the lots. The lease agreement will renew annually after the first five years.
