SANTA ROSA BEACH, Fla. (WMBB) — Recent numbers show tourism is growing this year in Walton County.

Staff gave an update on financials at the Tourism Development Council meeting on April 2.

The data shows tax revenue and active rental listings are up for this year.

According to county clerk data, Walton County collected $1,000,000 more than Okaloosa and Bay Counties in bed tax collection from October to January of this fiscal year.

The state tourism department reported that most of the Walton County visitor spending is dedicated to lodging, followed by food and shopping in the South end.

The state said they are focusing their efforts this year to promote more outdoor adventures across Walton County.

“This is critical in Walton County as we’re trying to start marketing North of the bay. We want people to stay in South Walton as much as they can, keep spending their nights in beds whether it’s a vacation rental or hotel in South Walton. But we want them to stay longer and experience what we have to offer North of the bay,” Matt Tuchman, Visit Florida regional partnership manager said.

The county said visitor centers set up around the county are also growing in popularity with a more than 8% increase of traffic since October.
