What to do in Ottawa this week: Check out a local act at Bluesfest, take in cultural music

Postmedia arts writers Lynn Saxberg and Peter Hum share their recommendations on things to do in Ottawa this first week of July. If you’re looking for the blues at Bluesfest, you’ll have to venture away from the main stage. On Friday, check out the air-conditioned intimacy of the Barney Danson theatre (inside the Canadian War Museum), where the reenergized Ottawa singer-guitarist Jesse Greene performs with her new band at 8 p.m., warming up the stage for Southern Avenue, a soulful, Memphis-based band that brings a fresh new perspective to the blues. Other bluesy acts on the various stages during the festival’s opening weekend include singer-harmonica player John Németh tonight, Texas singer-songwriter Sugaray Rayford, perennial favourites the Texas Horns, Montreal powerhouse Dawn Tyler Watson, and teenage troubadour Jack Barksdale.
